I HATE, I Friggin HATE Snakes

See the bulge in this f#ckers belly? That's our four baby Cardinals!
Fear not, it's a little tough to see but his head is severed the SOB
I hate snakes.

We had a little discussion and Bic and I both blame momma and papa. We rarely saw them feeding and we kinda thought that was odd. So, you got babies screaming and snakes stalking, mother nature takes it's course. Still hate snakes.

Payback Won't Be A Bitch Today

Now the rest of the story......see the two little boxes on the left $57.60 worth of brass, the big thing next to it is an old radiator from the old AC unit of this hose, $71.44, now, the tiny box on the right that looks like there is nothing in it, $9.21 for a few pieces of skinny copper wire. The other three items, the loose wire under the tiny box, the bucket and the big box,$213.84. Total on the second trip $352.09 Total for the alluminum only,$245.37 And a grand total this morning,$597.46

Ahhh, Rental Car

videoJust testing my ability to upload vids with blogger. It seems there is no problem uploading my old vids but I can't get a new one to. dang it!

Anyway this is last year when it was cheaper to rent a car, buy gas and drive to Boston than flying on short notice. Wonder how it works out now!

Update: Just saw momma with two fawns skirting the tree line. I had the camera ready but she stayed just out of the shot.

Our Critters

This morning we had a visitor hoping for some water [sorry it's been very dry].Then, after momma filled their bellys, I took a peek. Four, stuffed all together little baby cardinals [not even hungry].

Almost.....

I was going to wait till she was outside and all done to take the next pictures but you see I couldn't wait. This is the toughest part of a job like this because the to-do list is all these little things that end up taking way longer than you think. The windshield still needs two more coats of varnish to get caught up and you can see there's plenty of dust laying around. The white hull needs two finish coats at least before I put it on the trailor. I'd love to paint the soles [floors], finish varnish the interior and then one final complete coat of varnish, but I'm not so sure the owner wants me to, $$$. Not to mention polish all the crome and clean the steering wheel.

Pacific Passage

My nephew Christian landed himself a ride to New Zealand on a 40 something ft. sailboat out of Panama. "Ferdinand" is the boat and the captain is David Gale who left the British Virgin Islands a while back. I'm about as happy as a guy can be for Christian. At 27, he's taking after his uncle and going on a world adventure that will make him a new man, a sailor, a mariner and a man of adventure. I couldn't be more proud! I added two links to my blog, "Ferdinand in the Pacific" is a blog of the captain, David Gale, who most likely is a bit new with the whole blog thing. The other link is up in the left sidebar, "Pacific Crossing". That one shows the progress day by day of the boat crossing the incredibly vast Pacific, heading for the first small group of islands, The Marquesas. If you click on "more" on that map you can choose photos and see pics that people have posted on the whole dang planet. It's a trip to go cruising around anywhere, even your hometown, or islands of the world. Anyway check it out!

Our Newby Cardinals On The Hanging Fern

The Before--The After--And The Aftermath

Crossed a milestone here yesterday by getting rid of all the old fuse boxes and other unnecessary crap that had been added to over the years. Also there is now no overhead wires coming into the house.
With all this crap out of the way [dismantle the copper and sold] I can now slowly but surely rewire the house and have a place to properly run the power from. I also have a wire chase [box] running from these new panels all the way to the other end of the house so all the wires are neatly run through this main channel. All neat and tidy!

Call Me Sparky Today

Shutting down thursday morning, early thirty, to rewire my house to a new 400amp service.

Refreshing!

I stole this from Bagwine!
Because, I wanted to have something to drink, to celebrate winning another peach over at DocMtCat.

Finishing Up

After a few caulking repairs on October Morning she should be feeling good for the summer. I could convince the owners that the aft deck needs a sanding and patchwork but while doing that front deck, my shoulder and arm took a beating holding back that 8" grinder which is always trying to jump out of your hands and if it does, it WILL damage the gel coat.
They have invited us out for a day on the boat but shit, I got to get out on my own boat!!!!

For Reggie

I bet you could find some instuctions on line.
For an anchor chain, you will need the thimble.

Meet The Jenks

When we bought this house on the hill, the entire 1800 sf upstairs and most all of the 1800 sf apartment in the cellar were completly [only small paths] filled with antiques, books, boxes and stuff. We made an offer "as is" but they wanted to "go through" the tons of stuff. OK We let them do it on weekends and such for the next three months, untill they got exasperated with the volume of all the stuff. They wanted to haul it all to the dump for us. No,no, we'll go through it we said. We have rooms of furniture that need a little cleaning and some glue, piles and boxes of books, many from the 1800s. Old railroad memrobelia, dynamite boxes and all kinds of old stuff. When I get the gumption I'm gonna set up on E-bay and auction off most of this stuff.
This old photo card was written in July 1892.
Sorry, I didn't use a tripod to take this pic, it's a tad blurry.

Dirty Day Indeed!....Updated.......Have a nice weekend!

The sanding of teak decks is right up there when it comes to dirty jobs. As the years go by the teak wood slowly looses the pith [loose part of grain] on the surface through wear, sun, weather and washing. That makes all the rubber seams, seem like the rubber is coming up out of the seams, but its not, it's the teak shrinking. So when sanding something like this, your really sanding all the rubber first and it's a nasty, dirty thing to sand.
Look at how much of that stuff is all over the boat, imagine what I looked like on a hot, humid, sweaty kind of day doing that.
I LOVE making boats PURTY!!!!!!!

Update: all sanded, minor repairs done and then hosed her down. Ready for the owners to enjoy the weekend. Next week, some rubber repair and then talk them into some other work "FOR" the boat. Ha!

The Blue Footed Booby

Got an E-mail recently from my nephew who went off on his trip to South America by car. That was the diesel and vegetable oil running VW Rabbit. Well, that trip fell through after his buddy fell into luuvvee with a girl back home. So my nephew carried on his own and ended up in Panama where he slipped a ride on a sailboat to New Zealand. First stop, 10 days out, 860 miles, The Galapagos Islands. It's slow going, sailing through the doldrums [areas near the equator] but soon they'll hit the trade winds and take the cake run down to the southern Pacific. This trip that he is taking is tops on my list of things I still want to do!

Splotchy?

This was that splotchy transom. All I did was tear of the finish in the splotchy parts, then did some build-up coats in the areas I tore up and finished her off with a complete coat over the whole area. Let me tell you folks it sure was hot out there in the boatyard doing this job. I much prefer working out under the cover of the slips, it makes me smile just thinking that people pay me what they do so I can enjoy myself making their boat more like how they really want it, Ha.

I do have a couple of sailboats that need my work and sailboats are never undercover.

The next pics of this boat will be the decks. Gonna get a little messy!

Time To Make Shiny

I'll be finishing up this project by the end of the month.
This is the second coat of varnish. Stll in the rough so to speak, because now I start sanding in between coats to bring out the luster.

This morning I have to run down to the marina and finish that transome out with finish coats.
I'll remember to bring my camera this time .
Have a great Friday!

Run Away From Ray

I saw this thing on 60 minutes, this weekend. They had a demonstration and it really was funny the way everyone just....ran away. They were fine, but when that hit them the look on everyones face was priceless. RUN AWAY!
In the demonstration the group of people were almost a mile away across a field.
The military and contractor Raytheon have also been working on a ray gun that emits a 130˚ F (54˚ C) ray that penetrates clothing and the surface (1/64 of an inch) layer of skin, according to a report from The Associated Press. AP notes that “the technology is supposed to be harmless — a non-lethal way to get enemies to drop their weapons.”
All branches of the military have expressed interest in these ray guns, which will not go into production until at least 2010.

Sunday I Was Busy Un-Wireing The House On The Hill

This is the new, chase, [a channel of sorts to hold all the wire running through the house] I finished on Saturday. 2x6s nailed onto 2x4s nailed onto the floor joists, 15 +3/4" wide, the whole length of the cellar. Yee Haw!!!!!!
This is an old panel on the right, that was full of wire going throughout the house. Today I removed it all, except a few circuts, then yanked all the wire off the cellar ceiling, wrapped it into nice burnable chunks and threw them all into this corner. [imagine these concrete walls painted, because that will happen too, at some point in this raging ocean of projects]
At $3.98 a pound at the local scrap yard, this looks like an average of about $4.00 a bundle. I bet I have another 100 pounds of copper to come out of this house. All that you have to do, to clean this wire, is throw it in a fire, let all that crap burn off, then while still hot pull it out and drop it into a bucket of water. If I threw what you see here away, it would be throwing away money. [Many Loafs Of Bread] I don't like WASTE.
That makes me think of Yucca!
We got Yucca blooming in these parts!
Blooming Bloody Yucca!!!! Have you heard about the new "Ray Gun"? You can't help but runaway and you do, just that!
Runaway Ray Gun, Runaway, Runaway
I just love Monty Python!
