Saturday On The Hill

Bic did some house, Wally shopping and then headed off to Malihini to put in some very "hot" work on the steering wheel dashbord. With a heat gun, on a very humid day, she fought the steering wheel and the compass to get that dash stripped of it's old finish. Love... Let me count the ways! This picture is in the wrong place, it's what I was doing after, I managed to get some electrical work done for the first time since my shoulder went whack, and of course not a dang thing at all, to do with Bics day.
My shoulder held up good, only a little sore. The last two weeks, I have used it, but not like what I have to do in the cellar, all over head work, arms in the air. 6 hours of that is enough....phhsstt pop Southpaw Double Hopped Light to the rescue!!!

So after a couple phhsstt pops I had the lawn mower on my list. Last week I broke the spindle thing, see it on the board with pieces not attached?[new one looks pretty huh?] What a bear to get that old sucker off. I actually tryed to do this yesterday but it fought me tooth and nail to the point of F#%k this, see you tomorrow. Anyway..... a day in the life! phhsstt pop!

A Day In The Life This Week - It Ain't Concrete Or Rock, And It Sure As Hell Ain't Asphalt Shingles

After a 25 minute drive, with one and a half traffic lights at the beginning, and maybe a 6th of a mile walk down the dock pushing my tool cart, I arrive here, set out my coffee, grab a little sandpaper or masking tape [blue] and stroll around this boat while redoing 15 windows and two vent plates on this Grand Banks Trawler. OK, I do have to sometimes handle a paintbrush, in this case it's a 1" brush, and more times than you can imagine, I'm draging a vacume cleaner around sucking dust!
But to me, the best part of a day making money, is I get to work barefoot. [which I do] When I park the cart next to the boat, before extension chords or anything else, I slip off the shoes and dig in, to the job.

Blooming Magnolia and Another Project Bites The Dust

This year our two big magnolia trees are bloomin like crazy. Last year they didn't do so well because we had just recently exposed them to some air and sunshine. They were about 20 years overgrown with all kinds of trees and vines. This year they seem very happy, and this sucker of a bloom was in reach so I nabbed it.
The upper half of the bookshelves is now complete. That was a project that got thrown into the pile of projects that really should have waited, but Bic deserves some interior work going on too.

Morning Update!

The only reason I'm here typing this is because there is a bunch of deer in the driveway and I don't want to leave and interrupt their breakfast!

Hope you all had a great weekend! We got a lot done on Malihini, making her ready for much more use this summer. I got the exhaust manifold apart [needs new elbow] and the raw water pump apart so I can replace impellers. Most of the trim down below has been screwed into place, the soles [floor] are all screwed down and the pieces that needed replaceing are all made but waiting for an epoxy coat and paint. I also started finishing out the hanging locker, and cleaned getting ready for a fresh coat of primer and paint. Bic got the forward cockpit sanded stained and first coat varnish and stb countertop stripped, bleached, sanded and stained.

A Good Day Not To Go Shopping.

We did manage to get started on finishing the new stairs with a flower garden. The day was going to be shopping for Bic and she even talked me into going, it would be a good rest for the arm. Well after hanging out front for awhile I gave her just enough time to talk herself out of going shopping on such a beautiful day. We hung around outside all day and I got the lawns cut.

We had a very tough last two weeks with me being broken and a closing that was stressing us out because of the amount of time it stretched out to. After two months we signed on Thursday. We take pride that our credit score is in the eight hundreds, and we work hard to maintain that by never ever, ever being late for a payment. We had an equity line of credit due on the first of May with a 10 day grace. Not having the money to pay that on time had me with my tail between my legs at our bank asking for forgiveness. Not comfortable for me! Then it had to go past the 10 days, again tail between my legs at the bank. I know from experience most closings never go smooth, this one taught me to beware of the bumbling broker! The bottom pic is the old shelves and the top is the new. Still got to give it a good long time to dry so books won't stick! Of course now the bottom looks like shit so I will pull the doors, rearrange the stiles, add some glass to the doors and all new hardware. [at a later date]

Sunday Wasn't Turkey Day...Or Was It?

While talking to my mom on the phone on that special day I was standing out in front of the house and heard this funny noise. I look around and see six turkeys cruising in single file coming onto my property from the new road I cut last winter. They were beeping and bopping, definitly on a mission to get somewhere, and get there fast. They cruised on in by my trucks around back, never skipping a beat. I told my mom I had to get my camera and by the time I did, there they were still running on out of the other road I cut to the lower property. Never seen anything like it! It was like, " Come on you guys Hurry Up, Hurry Up, we got to get there!"
And away they went!

I remember way back when, when my time off was filled with fun things to do. You know, "What are we going to do this weekend?" Lets take a hike, or we could go see that new movie and then stop in to see your brother. I guess that all wasn't that long ago that we had spare time. We're trying at this point to get some of that, but the truth is we don't leave a lot of room for it. This is a very large project that we chose to do, and now at times it seems a bit overwhelming. Our ideas of changing the interior to moderize things have slipped into the, minor change catogory. Open a wall here, new floors and faucets for the bathrooms. Redo one full bathroom and of course all new wiring and most plumbing. That seems daunting to most people I'm sure, but what we really wanted to do was gut one whole side of the living space and make it new. In remodeling that is the easy way to upgrade. It is also the most expensive and time consuming. To complete the exterior will take us through this year, which will make it three years work to get it all looking purty from the outside. I thought five years to get this done, so with two more on the interior, a chance for the housing market to come up, we sell, hoping to double our money. This will be the last big house project. We need some spare time back! Hopefully a three or four month boat cruise and then go buy our next house by looking through a book, yes, manufactured housing has come a long way. They make some damn good houses and we can pick hardwood floors, that nice big wrap around porch and sit back and wait till they set it up on our foundation.

Then I'll build my garage-shop! LOL

I 'm not sure yet how to place text at this video, give me week or four. Anyway, here is a walkaround of our place on the hill. It's a bumpy ride! I 'll have to learn to move slower and speak less.

I had all the intentions of putting in a day of work on the docks today. I was thinking the toughest part would be having to reach out and put masking tape on from varying positons of the deck. Well, I couldn't get my tool cart in the truck without a slight yank to my shoulder. Called the customer, I think she believes me. I hope so! So another hard day doing very little. DAMN

Broken Wing

Any one who wants to can give me the, "I told you so"
Yesterday while spreading concrete resurfacer in the morning,[afternoon planned for Malihini] I switched to my left arm and reached to far and a bit of a pop came from my shoulder. Ouch! Since then I have got my arm in a sling. Bwoken! [not "really" broken]

New Work , Good Friends, Living The Moment

This first boat I'll be replacing most all the wood you see at the front of the boat. They're called, caprails.

This boat [trawler] I have to repaint all the windows, remove varnish on the transom and redo, they don't like the splotchy whitish spots. also the teak decks need many minor repairs and a sanding.

While down in that neck of the woods I stopped in to see my buddy Bob and his brother Ray and cousin Paul who are building a 50 lot development. Theres only 6 new homes in at the time, but look at the location. I love going there and I always stay a few hours, help out and do some local, jawing. Good old local boys still working hard in there 60s. I helped lay concrete curbs, one full truck, about 700ft. Living for the moment!!!!!

A Whine Post

Got to start driving off to work, to a 25min. drive and the other one is a 45 min. drive. With gas prices as they are,[bastards] I'm going to have to get a grip on my wallet.
The owner of the Thompson came to see the boat yesterday and did what all customers of wood boat restorations do, whine. Oh, they're happy with the boat, of course, they always are. It's the same old, "wasn't expecting it to cost so much". So I say the basic next line, "OK, I'll start rushing along to finish" "No, No, just keep doing it right, it sure is going to be pretty huh?" "Yes it is!" It's a play that's played out many times. It also works out good for me because of the cost, they asked if I could stretch out the work over the next couple of months? Sure that works for me. I'm real close to start staining and varnish anyway.
Later!
